Canterbury combines modernity with history you can experience first-hand; its size makes it ideal for families.
Canterbury is a beautiful historic city in the south-east of England, in the county of Kent. It lies approximately 90 kilometres east of London and is best known for its impressive cathedral, its medieval streets and its long history. The city combines English tradition and modernity in a unique way, offering a lively atmosphere with plenty of students, small cafés and cosy shops.
The famous cathedral
The city’s most famous landmark is Canterbury Cathedral. It is one of England’s most important churches and forms part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its history dates back to the year 597, when the missionary Augustine of Canterbury founded a Christian church here.
Medieval alleyways and English town life
Anyone strolling through the old town will discover narrow streets, old half-timbered houses, small bookshops and traditional English pubs. The area around High Street is particularly lovely – a real paradise for families.
Another well-known landmark is the Westgate, a medieval city gate with two striking towers. Nearby are the Westgate Gardens, a green park area on the River Stour. There, you can take a stroll beneath ancient trees or go for a boat trip on the river.

The historic city of Canterbury in Kent offers a wonderful blend of centuries-old history, vibrant culture and picturesque countryside. As the city centre is very compact, almost everything can be explored easily on foot.
The best activities and experiences for families in Canterbury:
🗺️ Historical discoveries & tours
- Canterbury Cathedral: The undisputed heart of the city and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Gothic architecture is breathtaking, and the cathedral is famous for the historical events surrounding the murder of Thomas Becket.
- St Augustine’s Abbey & St Martin’s Church: Anyone interested in England’s deep-rooted history should visit these two sites. St Martin’s is the oldest continuously used parish church in the English-speaking world.
- The Old City Walls & Westgate Towers: The Lords of the Ring City Walls Tour takes you along the well-preserved, 1,700-year-old fortifications. From the Westgate Towers – the largest surviving city gate in England – you can enjoy a magnificent view over the city.
- Interactive city treasure hunts for families: If you’d rather explore the city in a fun way, there are various digital treasure hunts (such as the Chaucer Revelation Escape Game or the Go Quest Adventures) where you solve puzzles as you wander through the alleyways.
🛶 Relaxation & nature
- Historic punting trips on the Great Stour: One of the most delightful activities in Canterbury. You glide along the river in flat-bottomed boats (punts), past the picturesque Old Weavers’ Houses, ancient Franciscan monasteries and under historic bridges.
- Dane John Gardens: A beautiful, historic park right next to the city walls, featuring a striking mound offering fantastic views. Perfect for a relaxed family picnic.
🛍️ Shopping & Culture
- The King’s Mile & Old Town: The cobbled streets around Burgate and Sun Street are lined with independent shops, arts and crafts, cosy pubs and cafés (such as Garage Coffee Roasters). This is where you really feel that quintessentially English charm.
- Get creative at Canterbury Pottery: If you’re looking for an indoor activity on a rainy day, you can design your own pottery or buy handmade ceramics at the historic Canterbury Pottery.
