Family Language Holiday in Cork, Ireland

Cork is a fantastic destination for families. Parents and children can learn together at a variety of easily accessible, wonderful venues. All family members can flourish in their own learning environments and enjoy the Irish way of life.

Cork, Europe’s Capital of Culture (2005), offers you an unrivalled destination for your family language holiday. Ireland’s second-largest city strikes a balance between the past and the future like no other. The typical, charming little houses in medieval alleyways give the city its unique character. Modern buildings provide fascinating contrasts. And if that’s not enough – Cork is the capital of the county of the same name, boasting a breathtaking coastline, long-standing traditions and other picturesque spots. Images Scenes from Cork, Ireland

Scenes from Cork, Ireland

So far, Cork has mainly been known to those in the know about Ireland. Yet the Republic’s second-largest city is perhaps the Irish people’s secret capital, especially as the ‘Rebel City’ was at the heart of the Irish struggle for independence. People here – apart from the Dubliners, perhaps – refer to Corgaigh as ‘the real capital’! Did you know that the famous Irish butter comes from Cork?

The city’s landmarks are the River Lee, which winds its way through the city via two channels, and the famous Shandon Bells in the tower of St Anne’s Church. The bells are known for never striking the correct time. If you’re feeling energetic, you can climb the 36-metre-high bell tower with your children and ring the bells. Let’s see who’s first! The English Market is also a must-see; it was built in 1788. As well as a fantastic range of fresh produce, the market hall offers a huge selection of local and international delicacies at small snack bars and cafés. Perhaps a light lunch after your lesson? Why not give it a go!

Contrary to popular belief, you can also enjoy excellent dining out in Ireland. At Fenn’s Quay Restaurant on Sheares Street, for example, families with children are given a warm welcome and treated to a special experience. The food is absolutely delicious yet healthy, and they cater brilliantly for children – for example, with early dinners, breakfast or brunch. Since 2014, the restaurant has been recognised annually by McKeannes Guides and is a member of the Kids Size Me Association. So be sure to give it a go!

Pizza is, of course, always a good choice. The locals would wholeheartedly recommend Uncle Pete’s. They also serve fresh pasta and burgers here. If you don’t feel like going out, Uncle Pete’s is happy to deliver! You’ll also be able to enjoy your family language holiday in Ireland to the full in the area around Cork. The famous Cliffs of Moher really let you feel the wildness and vastness of the sea. It’s a dream to feel the wind in your hair here. On your trips around the country, you’ll meet lots of very friendly people and be able to admire some stunning countryside.

Thanks to Ireland’s mild climate, the plants here grow incredibly lushly and there are always beautiful gardens to marvel at. One destination could be King John’s Castle in Limerick, for example. Here, too, you can either set off on your own or join one of the excursions organised by our easy language school. Whatever you do, don’t miss a trip to Blarney Castle! Legend has it that if you kiss the stone, you’ll be able to speak English fluently.

Leisure time activities

Our easy language schools in Cork offer exciting activities and excursions for young and old alike. Irish dance classes and a pub crawl for adults, as well as a visit to the University of Cork, are just a few examples – and also a great opportunity to put your newly acquired language skills into practice straight away. Take advantage of the language school’s leisure programme or set off on your own discovery tour with your children. Particularly exciting for children and teenagers aged 10 and over is the Titanic Experience in Cobh, the Titanic’s final port of departure, or a trip with your younger children to the Fota Wildlife Resort on Fota Island, just 20 minutes outside the city. At the weekend, you can join excursions to the Ring of Kerry or the Cliffs of Moher… As you can see, you certainly won’t get bored in Cork!

Chosen highlights:
  • Titanic Experience Cobh
  • Fotal Wildlife Park
  • Cork Harbour Boat Hire
  • Blackrock Castle Observatory
  • Cliffs of Moher
  • Ring of Kerry
Good reasons for this jouney:
