Map of Edinburgh, Scotland

Edinburgh, the capital of southern Scotland, is only about a two-hour flight from airports in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. There are a wide range of direct flights available. Edinburgh is both an international business hub and a city steeped in history. Its internationally renowned and popular university brings together students from all over the world.

Edinburgh and the surrounding area offer countless exciting opportunities. Of course, a visit to Edinburgh Castle is just as much a part of the experience as the Edinburgh Festival, a fantastic arts and street festival. If you visit in late July or early August, you’ll be able to experience the famous festival to the full, with programmes for young and old alike. However, accommodation is in very short supply at this time of year, so we recommend booking well in advance.

Another exciting attraction is the interactive Dynamic Earth museum, which explores the Earth’s formation. You can experience history first-hand on the Mary King’s Close guided tours, which take you through the underground passages of Edinburgh.

Just outside the city, right by the fascinating Forth Rail Bridge, you can observe seals, sharks and many other marine creatures through the world’s longest underwater tunnel, Deep Sea World. The gigantic tank was built in an old quarry. From the café, you can watch divers feeding the sharks!

Impressions of Edinburgh, Scotland

The city of Edinburgh – perfect for young explorers! The centre of Edinburgh is a manageable size. You can easily reach most of the sights, such as the famous Royal Mile and Edinburgh Castle, on foot. Great day trips, including visits to Stirling Castle, Berwick-upon-Tweed or even Edinburgh Castle itself, will be the highlights of your easy language trip!

Edinburgh is a vibrant, international university city that will captivate you. It’s the perfect place to explore bit by bit, day by day. You’ll find plenty to discover here on foot with your new friends. At Wings on Fishmarket Close, you can get absolutely delicious chicken wings for very little money, with a different sauce on offer every time.

You can also experience the city’s magic all year round at countless wonderful festivals.

As well as attractions such as Edinburgh Castle and the zoo, there’s also Holyrood Palace, the British Queen’s official residence in Scotland.

Even today, the royal family still lives here during the summer months. The Palace of Holyrood House was built in its present form in the 17th century. Its most famous resident was Mary, Queen of Scots! You’ll really enjoy the audio tour (in English?!) of the palace, which takes you through the building whilst telling lots of stories. The huge garden and the ruins are a brilliant place to visit afterwards. You can then enjoy the traditional, delicious afternoon tea with scones right next door in the café.

Incidentally, characters such as Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, Sherlock Holmes and the legendary Harry Potter were created here in Edinburgh.
